Meet Renato Tavares Black Belt Jiu Jitsu Master
Renato Tavares was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1968. He started training in BJJ at the age of six with Geni Rebello and Elias Martins.
Grand Master Rebello is one of the best Professors in Brazil and has achieved a coral belt 9th degree. Rebello trained under Carlos and Helio Gracie at the famous Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro.
Rebello and Martins have produced many State, National, Pan-America and World Champions around the globe. Elias Martins is still teaching high level Jiu Jitsu in Teresópolis, Brazil
Tavares is a world renowned authority in the areas of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Grappling Enhancement and is one of the best coaches in BJJ technique. His thirst for knowledge has made Tavares a technician par excellence. He has been training for about 44 years and competing for more than 35 years.
At the age of ten, he was instructing other students by helping his Masters Geni Rebello, Elias Martins and his son, Cirilo Rebello, teach new students.
In the last twenty-five years, in the many cities and states that he has visited, Tavares has made a big contribution to the sport of Jiu Jitsu through his high level of instruction. He moved to Parana in 1996 and helped make a big change in the BJJ community there.
He continued teaching in Maringá as well as in Curitiba after relocating there. In Curitiba Tavares, Helio Moreira and Carlos Lima took Jiu Jitsu to the next level. They made Curitiba bjj recognized in the bjj community by organizing a lot events and in just three years they produced the first world champions and many national champions.
After training under Geni, Tavares moved to Rio in 1988 and trained with Carlson Gracie Sr. for over 15 years.

In 2002, his student, Jeff Davis, invited Renato to move to the USA. Renato began teaching in Kentucky where he stayed for about 1 year.
In 2003, Tavares moved to Florida to train and to help develop the MMA Team, “American Top Team”, recognized today as one of the best MMA teams in the world.
Tavares has been teaching BJJ and Grappling to students from a wide variety of backgrounds including: FBI Agents, Military, Police Officers and Athletes.
In 2004, he started his own association. Currently Tavares has more than 25 schools under his umbrella operating in Florida, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Illinois and Arkansas. In addition, his association has member international gyms in Honduras, Costa Rica, Brazil and Poland. Tavares is looking forward to building a solid and well organized Association.
Tavares began competing in tournaments at age eight. He has competed in over 200 different tournaments and almost 700 competition matches; winning most of them. He has titles such as 4 x World Champion, 2x International Champion, 6 x Pan America Champion, as well as many super fights in events like Respect, Fight to Win as well as many State Championships. Also, he was considered the best technical athlete of the tournament in multiple events.
In 2009, he took 1st place in Florida States, Nationals, Pan America and Miami International Championships. He also earned 3rd Place in American Nationals Absolute Division, Pan America Absolute and Abu Dhabi Pro BJJ. In 2018, in his debut at the European Championships held in Portugal, he won his division.
Tavares has pure Jiu Jitsu in his body. Precise, technical, versatile, and always looking to employ techniques and surprises against his opponents.
